Tau Theta History

In 1976, Verna Elaine Reynolds, a Zeta legacy from Washington, D.C., sought to establish Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. at the University of Virginia. With the support of Phi Beta Sigma member Dwight Ford, the Alpha Phi Zeta Graduate Chapter in Richmond was motivated to organize a Zeta Phi Beta Sorority “Rush” on the grounds of the University of Virginia. The event attracted strong interest. Amongst the attendees were Verna and five other women—Deborah Mason, Sophonia Christian, Lauralyn Washington, Nancy Watkins, and Monica Green. Together, they formed the charter line of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Tau Theta chapter. The chapter was chartered on April 2, 1978, with the induction led by Zeta’s 17th International President, Janice Kissner in Norfolk, VA. Since its chartering, the chapter has remained dedicated to serving as strong role models for university students and the Charlottesville community. Its members have embodied intelligence, confidence, inclusivity, and grace, upholding the ideals of Zeta Phi Beta with dignity and respect.
